Tried & Tested

TGV Lyria

Glen Mutel heads from Paris to Bern with TGV Lyria

Seats: The train’s interiors were styled by designer Christian Lacroix, who decked out second class in purple and orange — much better than it sounds. The seats were comfortable and sufficiently spacious with all the pockets, trays, compartments and
plug sockets in the right places.

Food & drink: There was a slick looking cafe-bar, with smart standing areas. It served a decent selection of drinks, snacks and microwaved hot dishes — not to mention some very pleasant bottled beers.

Service: In the cafe-bar, service was friendly and efficient, and the tri-lingual announcements were welcome
and clear.

Tickets: My entire journey, including Eurostar tickets from London to Paris, was booked via trainline.eu — the process was extremely simple, with a single transaction, and if you book three months in advance, you can expect to pay around €200 (£177) per person.

What else: TGV Lyria has switched from the two class set-up to three classes: Standard, Standard Premier and Business Premier — although there’s virtually no difference between the new Standard and second class.
